Motor graders or alternatively called road graders, graders or maintainers are absolutely necessary equipment at any construction site. Typically, they are self-propelled machines that have long adjustable metal blade positioned between the front and rear wheel of the equipment. The motor grader models have three axles with the engine and cab situated above the rear axles at one end of the vehicle and a third axle at the front end of the vehicle with the blade in between. With the advancements in technology, motor grader operators now have access to apps specifically designed to enhance their productivity and efficiency. Generally, motor graders are employed for creating smooth and flat surface after using bulldozers and scrapers.

What is a Grader?

A grader most commonly known as a motor grader or road grader is a multi-purpose earthmoving machine that is used not only in construction sites to create flat smoother surfaces in road building projects but also in the mining/quarry industry for mining underneath the ground surface. They are uniquely structured and are majorly characterized by a long, large and adjustable blade between the front and the rear twin wheels.

Due to the many uses attributed to this equipment and its precision in producing quality surface finishes within the shortest time possible, the rate of demand of graders has significantly increased over the last few years and for this reason, is therefore deemed as an absolutely necessary equipment in any construction site.

Identify the Applications You Need it For

Motor graders handle many applications and types of ground surfaces that are similar, but not always the same. It matters whether you’re using the equipment for construction, roadwork, agricultural work, forestry jobs, mining applications, or other purposes.

Frame of the Grader

When you are looking at used motor graders for sale, you need to pay close attention to the frame of the machine. Ensure that the equipment does not show any signs of rust or corrosion. See that there is no metal reinforcement on the frame and, if there is, ask the seller about who carried out the repair and maintenance work on the equipment. Make sure that the person who did the repair and maintenance work was a qualified professional and try to look for servicing and maintenance documents as well.

Engine

Motor graders typically have diesel engines that range from 190 to 300 horsepower (142 to 224 kilowatts), but there are exceptions on the lower and higher end, including the Mahindra RoadMaster G75 at just under 80 horsepower (60 kilowatts) and the CAT 24, which produces up to 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts). A larger engine means more power, but it also means greater fuel consumption; so, again, it’s important to find the right machine based on the task.

However, not every country adheres to emissions standards, so some manufacturers still offer engines at lower tiers. If you work in a regulated industry or country with strict standards, make sure you choose a model with a Tier 4 Final (or international equivalent) engine.

Versatile

If you are going to make a significant purchase like a motor grader, you might consider other ways you can make use of your purchase so that you can compensate for the upfront cost of the equipment. Most motor grader models are capable of supporting attachments in addition to the front mounted blade and axles on the rear end that are used for grading purposes. Sometimes, motor graders have a ripper or scarifies attached to the back that helps it tear through hard surfaces.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Motor Graders

Advantages of Motor Graders:

  1. Creates smooth and flat surfaces:- Motor graders are specifically designed to create flat and smooth surfaces, which is essential for various construction, mining, and agricultural projects.
  2. Versatility:- Motor graders can be used for a variety of tasks, including grading, scarifying, mixing aggregates, creating crowns, and supporting additional attachments.
  3. Saves time and effort:- The use of motor graders helps to save time and effort by completing tasks quickly and efficiently.
  4. Improved safety:- Motor graders have improved safety features that make them less risky to operate in comparison to other heavy equipment.

Disadvantages of Motor Graders:

  1. Cost:- Motor graders can be expensive, making it difficult for smaller businesses to purchase or rent them.
  2. High fuel consumption:- Motor graders typically use a lot of fuel, which can be costly over time.
  3. Operator training:- Operating a motor grader requires a skilled operator who has undergone specialized training. This can limit the pool of potential operators.
  4. Maintenance and repair costs:- As with any heavy equipment, motor graders require regular maintenance and repairs, which can add to their overall cost over time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, motor graders, also known as road graders, are essential equipment for creating smooth and flat surfaces in construction, mining, forestry, and agricultural industries. Before purchasing a motor grader, it's crucial to consider the intended applications and choose the appropriate model that fits the task. Additionally, it's important to inspect the frame for rust and corrosion and ensure that the engine meets the necessary emissions standards. Motor graders are versatile machines that can support additional attachments, such as rippers or scarifiers, making them a smart investment for businesses looking to increase their efficiency and productivity.
